GLENEA United’s run in this season’s FAI Junior Cup came to an abrupt halt yesterday afternoon when they were defeated 6-0 by reigning champions Sheriff YC in Dublin.
The Donegal League outfit, last season’s Premier Division winners, were aiming for one of the biggest upsets in the history of the competition as they sought a place in the last 16.
However, the Dubliner’s – who famously defeated Shelbourne in the 2011 FAI Senior Cup before being infamously thrown out of the competition for playing an ineligible player in that game – proved far superior as they kept alive their hopes of recording back-to-back triumphs.
Speaking to the Donegal News last night, Glenea manager Tom Coll said their opponents were the best side he has ever seen and envisages another success coming their way when the final takes place at the Aviva Stadium in May.
“We were just well beat,” he said. “They are as good a side as we’ve seen and it will take some side to beat them, especially if they play at home on their astro-turf. We were lost on it at times with the way they moved the ball – they’re so used to playing on it and it makes a huge difference.
“We lost the first goal after seven minutes when they scored direct from a corner. The wind was very strong and it just took the ball in over the ‘keeper into the far corner.
“We went in 2-0 down at half-time after conceding another two minutes before the break and ten minutes into the second half we had conceded three more.”
Coll, whose side are still in the running for a second straight league title, added: “We had a few chances ourselves – Denis Boyle forced their ‘keeper into a good save just before they got their second. We might well have had a penalty in the second half but, like everything else, nothing went our way.
“They could’ve had a man sent off after Michael Barry was taken down by a last man challenge. But, all in all, we don’t have too many complaints. They’re a top class side and will go far again in this season’s competition.”
