Shauna Scanlon’s local roots fuel global dreams

By Tara McCormack

BALLYBOFEY may be a small town, but for Shauna Scanlon, it’s a musical hub bursting with talent and inspiration.

The 33-year-old musician, singer, and songwriter has been honing her craft since a young age, playing the piano and being immersed in a community rich with music.

“People who visit always comment on how much music there is here for such a small town,” she said.

“I’m surrounded by so many talented musicians, singers, songwriters and it’s incredible. They’ve really shaped my music and my journey.”

Shauna is quick to acknowledge the close-knit support system of musicians around her.

Whether she’s out for a night with friends or working on a new track, music is always in the air.

“Even on a night out, someone will pull out a guitar, and we’ll just have a session somewhere. It’s like a collective. We’re a team, and we all help each other.”

This camaraderie has fuelled Shauna’s creativity, especially in her song writing.

Her previous single ‘Homebird’ reflects on local themes, including the experiences of people emigrating from Donegal. “It’s about someone who actually wants to stay and sees the opportunities here,” she explained.

Living and creating music in Donegal has been more than just an influence for Shauna.

It’s been a major source of opportunity. “The opportunities are amazing,” she said, pointing to initiatives like ‘Over the West’ led by Maria McCormick, which supports independent artists.

Shauna’s recent performance history includes taking part in the Ghostlight Sessions at the Balor Theatre, a platform that helps artists connect with an audience.

“There’s also open mics and events like Monday night sessions on Highland Radio that have given me so much support,” she added.
“Everyone here helps each other.”

Her latest single, ‘Brand New,’ marks the artists third release and showcases her signature mix of relatable themes and vibrant melodies.
Co-written with her guitarist, the track was designed to be a fun, feel-good anthem.

“We wanted to create a funky tune that gets you in the mood for going out, having a wee drink, and relaxing,” she shared.

Inspired by one of her favourite local spots, Bonner’s Corner Bar, Shauna even got the pub’s owner, Pat Bonner, involved.

“He has some famous one-liners, and he features at the end of the song.

“It was great to keep it local and make it something fun that people here could relate to.”

Shauna recently performed at an artist showcase on the stunning Arranmore Shorefront. “It was the most beautiful stage I’ve ever performed on,” she said. “With the water behind us and boats passing by. It was unreal.”

Next on her calendar is an October 6th performance in Dundalk for another ‘Over the West’ night.

She’s also gearing up for a major milestone with a live performance on Virgin Media’s 6 O’Clock Show this October. “It’s something I never dreamed of when I started out in February. To be on national TV this soon is unreal.”

She’ll be delivering a stripped-back rendition of ‘Brand New’ with her guitarist Aaron. “I’m just looking forward to it and enjoying the moment,” she shared.

“You never know who you could meet.”
