THE quarter-finals of the RTE Raidio na Gaeltachta Senior Football Championship will take place next weekend, August 17/18, the Donegal Competitions Controls Committee (CCC) has confirmed.
The games are stand alone fixtures, with the big game of the round between Kilcar and Glenswilly scheduled for
Sunday-week, August 18th, at Sean MacCumhaill Park, Ballybofey.
The game is a repeat of the 2011 SFC semi-final, won by Glenswilly, and is also a repeat of their war of attrition from the group stages
this year.
The sides crossed swords in Towney on a day when Glenswilly’s stirring comeback wasn’t enough to reel in Kilcar, who took the win.
The game is one of two repeat fixtures with defending champions St Eunan’s taking on Malin at The Scarvey on Saturday 17th at 6.30pm. At the same time in Donegal town, Sean MacCumhaills take on Killybegs, while the fourth quarter-final, between Gaoth Dobhair and Ardara, takes place in O’Donnell Park on Sunday 18th at 6.30pm.
The draw for the semi-finals is likely to take place following the Gaoth Dobhair-Ardara game. The quarter-finals have been pulled forward having originally been pencilled in for mid-September.
Indeed, clubs had been informed on two separate occasions that the Championship would go ahead on the weekend of September 15th.
However, at a meeting last night the CCC voted to alter the plan.
“I would have been in favour of leaving it until September, but ther was a long disucssion about it and democracy decided that it would go ahead next weekend,” CCC secretary Sean McGinley confirmed to the Donegal News.
Mr McGinley is understood to have expressed concerns about players having potentially booked holidays having been informed of the original planned dates.
While there was no request or motion to have the fixtures brought forward, it is understood that the Donegal senior football team
management had expressed the wish to get the fixtures run off as quickly as possible.
Mr McGinley said: “There was input from the management, who felt that it would be better to get them over as soon as possible so the players could get plenty of rest before next year and get a good break over the winter. That feeling was conveyed to the committee.”
The semi-finals of the SFC are planned for the weekend of September 8th, with the county final pencilled in for Sunday, October 6th.
It is expected that the semi-finals of the Donegal Intermediate Championship will be played on the weekend of August 25th. The intermediate final is down for september 29th.
The Donegal Junior Championship final between Milford and Urris will be played on Sunday, August 25th at 6pm in O’Donnell Park.
