Labour Senator Jimmy Harte has welcomed news that the green light has been given by Government to a new modern postcode system for Ireland, which will make it easier for post, parcels and other services to reach local households.

“The new postcode system, championed by my colleague Minister for Communications, Pat Rabbitte, is the most advanced of its kind in Europe and the first in the world to use unique identifier codes.

“Under the new system, every household and premises in Donegal will now get its own easy-to-remember 7 or 8 character code. Not only will it improve the delivery of post and parcels to homes and businesses, but it will also make it easier for public services such as ambulances to find locations in remote areas.

“The new system will have a particular impact in rural Ireland, where one-third of all homes have ambiguous addresses that can only be interpreted by someone with local knowledge. From now on, a household’s unique code is all that needs to be given to a pizza delivery man, an online store or an ambulance dispatcher, removing the potential for any ambiguity or confusion that might arise.

“The new system will be up and running in 2015, and I am confident that it will lead to more modern, efficient and reliable postal system in Donegal ,while also assisting in the provision of public and public sector services in the local area.”
