Season’s best for McBrearty


Letterkenny’s Darren McBrearty ran a season’s best of 3:44.11 when placing third in a special senior Indoor 1,500m at AIT held to facilitate athletes chasing qualifying standards. John Travers of Donore Harriers took victory in 3:43.53 with Conor Bradley from City of Derry second in 3:44.07.

The club was well represented in the third and final race in the Lifford 5K road series.
The race was won by Foyle Valley’s Keith Shields of Foyle Valley in 15:34, with Finn Valley’s Gerard Gallagher second in 15:55 and his club mate, Dean Toland third in 16:37.

Paul Toner was Letterkenny’s best placed runner in seventh – his good time of 17:05 earned him seventh place.

Other LAC runners among the 260 finishers included Dayle Gallagher (13th in 17:49), Joe Gibbons (14th in 18:00), Paddy McDaid (20th in 18:19), Ciaran McBride (26th in 18:39), John Daly (31st in 18:52), Enda McBride (32nd in 18:58), Paul Cosgrove (45th in 20:05), Brian McBride (55th in 20:37), Richard Raymond (59th in 20:44), Noel Lynch (90th in 21:55), Tommy Hill (98th in 22:12), Cathal Roarty (110th in 22:33), Enda Carr (115th in 22:39), Andrea McFeely (150th in 24:13) and Lisa Gibson (187th in 26:12).

The group sessions on Tuesday and Thursday nights continue to draw large numbers and the club hopes to have a good entry in both the Bundoran 10 mile road race on Saturday, March 9th and for the national 10K road championships which are fixed for Sunday, April 14th, in the Phoenix Park, Dublin. The club’s next race will be the St Patrick’s Day 5K which will have an 11.15 am start on Sunday, March 17th.

A social night in the form of a table quiz is planned in the Old Orchard Inn, High Road, Letterkenny for Friday, March 15th at 9 pm. All members are asked to come along for what should be a night of fun and craic.

Preparations are continuing for the official opening of the Danny McDaid Track at the Aura Leisure Centre on Saturday, May 18th which will hopefully see the first ever sub four minute mile run in Donegal.

A five mile road race is planned for the evening before the international track meet, with the club’s 40th anniversary function taking place on the Saturday night in the Station House Hotel.
All club members are asked to lend their support and be available to help out for what is going to be an extremely busy weekend for the club.

The numbers drawn in the weekly jackpot on Saturday night in the Glencar Inn were 5, 12, 17 and 21. Christy Callaghan was the only match three winner and scoops 80 euro. The jacpot this weekend rises to 700 euro.
