The Seanad was today implored to back attempts to stop a documentary on the Creeslough tragedy being broadcast tonight.
A number of the bereaved families pleaded with TG4 not to go ahead with the screening, saying it was too soon as they are still grieving and trying to come to terms with the loss and devastation they have suffered.
In the Seanad Chamber on Wednesday afternoon, those calls were backed by Senator Niall Blaney.
He said he was contacted by “numerous people” over the last 48 hours.
He said people took part in the documentary under the belief that it would be broadcast “down the line”.
“As we know, there are investigations ongoing into the tragedy and it is just way too soon for something like this to be aired.
“I am asking the house to put their support behind me today. I am asking TG4 to withdraw that programme tonight. The families have not been consulted. It is no way to treat the families, it is disrespectful and the consequences of their efforts tonight will undo an awful lot of processing those families have done over the last three months.
“Use whatever powers you have in government circles to talk to the people in TG4 to have a bit of common sense and a bit of regard for the people in Donegal here and to have this programme withdrawn.”
