A GAOTH Dobhair man has taken the brave step of setting up his own business in West Donegal. After years of working abroad in the construction industry in the UK and America, Seán Gallagher (36) returned home to his native Gaoth Dobhair nearly two years ago.
While helping out in his family’s pub, the well-known Teach Mhicí in Derrybeg, Seán also noticed that there was no drainage service business in the area and decided to set up Síor-Shruth (Free Flow) last year.
After only a few months, Seán was in a car accident and broke both his legs, but now he his back on his feet and putting a lot of work into his new business venture.
“I did a lot of work laying pipes and sewer lines abroad and I saw locally when people had blocked drains, the closest drainage service was in Letterkenny.
“I did a star your own business course with MFG in Gaoth Dobhair, they were a great help, but sadly they are no longer in existence. I also received help from Údarás.
“It hasn’t been easy at times, starting your own business, it seems every time you get one issue resolved, another comes along.
“There have been a lot of stumbling blocks, but those have just made me even more determined to make this business a success.
“There are no businesses out there employing people, so instead of waiting around I decided to start my own business. It has been a lot of work trying to get the name out there, promoting yourself with flyers and online, but if you have an idea and think it can be a success, you should definitely go for it.”
Seán Mhicí said you get a great sense of fulfillment out of building up your own business. “Even if you fail, at least you gave it a try and that’s all that matters,” he said.
