Scarcity of ETB school cleaners

by Kate Heaney

A DISCUSSION at the latest ETB meeting in Letterkenny heard how there could be a shortage of cleaners in schools.

Parents representative, Geoffrey Browne, joining the meeting by Zoom from warmer climates, said that he met with members of the Oireachtas before Christmas to highlight the staff cleaning hours in schools.

“I have seen schools losing cleaners. When someone leaves they are not being replaced. You could end up with schools only being half cleaned.

“Maybe the CEO should write to the department pointing out this difficulty for schools,” Mr Browne said.

Andy McGovern, Director of OSD replied that it was something they had already written to the department about.

“The cleaning numbers being cut does not make sense. It seems schools have to outsource cleaners. We have not received a satisfactory reply,” Mr McGovern said.
