NEW Letterkenny Rovers manager Trevor Scanlon says he is ‘excited’ by the chance to lead the Leckview Park club.
The former Finn Harps and Sligo Rovers player, who also had an Ulster Senior League-winning stint at Letterkenny in 2005, will take up the post as manager of the club’s Ulster Senior League team next June, when his current contract as a Community Development Officer with the FAI comes to an end.
Scanlon is highly-regarded in local soccer and particularly in coaching circles.
“This is an exciting opportunity for me to work at a club I have great respect for and I can’t wait to get started,” he said.
Scanlon managed Letterkenny’s under 21 team in the League of Ireland in 2006 and 2007. He takes over in the USL team hotseat from Eamon McConigley, who stepped down from a five-year term as manager at the end of the 2012 season; a reign that yielded three trophies for the Cathedral Town club, including this year’s Donegal News USL Cup.
Until Scanlon can take full charge in June, Anthony Gorman – who manages the club’s Under-19 League of Ireland team – will take charge of team affairs alongside Liam O’Donnell.
Rovers Chairman Dessie Kelly said the club was ‘absolutely delighted’ at the appointment – made last night at a meeting of the club executive.
Mr Kelly said: “He is a top quality coach, will bring tremendous skills to the job, and has an outstanding knowledge of the game. His appointment will compliment the excellent work already being carried out at the club from under-19 level and below. We are looking forward immensely to working with him.”
