MORE than €1 million worth of drugs has been seized by gardaí in Donegal since the beginning of this year.
The scourge of the problem was under the spotlight at the latest meeting of Donegal Joint Policing Committee (JPC) in Lifford on Friday.
The startling statistic was revealed by Garda Chief Superintendent Goretti Sheridan in a presentation she made to JPC members.
Gardaí attached to the Donegal Divisional Drugs Unit seized over €125,000 in combined drugs on Thursday, April 18, following searches at two properties in Milford as part of Operation Tara. Two men were arrested.
Elsewhere, a major haul of cannabis, worth over €600,000, was located when gardai raided an industrial premises in Donegal Town in February.
The overall figure also comprises a number of smaller amounts of various drugs including cocaine, heroin and MDMA following garda operations at several locations across the county.
A dedicated drugs unit was re-established in Donegal garda Division in December.
