IT may have been a cold and wintry afternoon, but there was enough community spirit to warm the hearts of those who turned out for the first Sanctuary Runners event in Loughanure last Sunday.
Organised to bring people together to build trust, friendship and solidarity, those who take part can run or walk along a 4.4km route.
And as one of the organisers, Rachel Gallagher pointed out, it’s an ideal way for people to get to know each other in a healthy environment.
“We had 34 people taking part in our first event last Sunday,” she said.
“It wasn’t the most pleasant day to be out, but it was a great success and everyone seemed to enjoy it.”
Among the participants were new members of the community who are now living locally as part of the Government’s International Protection programme.
Rachel said Sanctuary Runners Loch an Iúir offers an opportunity for local people to get to know others who have moved into the area.
“People can run or walk and have a chat along the way,” she said.
“It’s a great way to meet up and at the same time get out for a run or a walk. I know myself that it’s much easier to go for a run when you have company and this is a fun way to do that.”
It’s hoped to organise a weekly Sunday run at 2pm, starting out from the Loughanure railway walk entrance.
