Sanctuary runner trio to take silver medal in Donegal Relay Race

A SANCTUARY Runner trio from Letterkenny capped off their maiden-relay race with a second-place finish in the Donegal Half Marathon last weekend.

Chibuzor Victor Ogoegbunam, Menad Yahiaoui and Opeyemi Hopsy Adeyemi ran seven-kilometres each over the 21km distance finishing in the silver medal position (in a time of 1:30.50) in a competition which saw 55 relay teams on the start line.

It was the first time the trio have run together in a competitive race and for the men, who live in apartments for international protection applicants in Letterkenny, an incredibly special achievement.

Menad, from Algeria originally said the day will live with him forever.

“It was an incredible experience. I am so grateful to the Sanctuary Runners and especially Kelly (Bonner) in Letterkenny for encouraging me to take part. I feel truly special to be part of such an inspiring group of people. I’m already looking forward to the next challenge – and I can’t wait to prepare, give my best again and hopefully secure even better results.”

Similarly for Nigerian duo Victor and Hopsy the day was incredibly uplifting.

“It was such a privilege to take part in the Donegal Half Marathon and I can’t wait to represent Sanctuary Runners again in the next event,” said Victor, while Hopsy added: “The joy of participation was crowned with a silver medal in the relay. Such great vibes, great teamwork and great memories to last the miles ahead.”

Also taking part in Sunday’s half marathon were three runners from the Loch an Iúir Sanctuary Runners group, Osasumwen Kelly Uwuigbe, Rachel Gallagher and Thiha Aung. And from Dublin Noel Selorm Adabblah who finished in 13th in the half marathon and Graham Clifford, founder of the Sanctuary Runners who also ran in the half.

“This was an incredibly special event,” said Clifford, adding: “and it’s so important that those living in Direct Provision can take part, show what they can do and revel in their achievements. The kindness, solidarity and welcome of people to all of our Sanctuary Runners on the day was really quite beautiful and uplifting. Donegal at its very best.”

For Kelly Bonner, organiser of the Letterkenny Sanctuary Runners, it was such a special moment to see the relay team on the podium.

“We are absolutely thrilled to celebrate all of our Sanctuary Runners who took part in the Donegal Half Marathon on Sunday especially Victor, Menad and Hopsy for securing second place. It was an unbelievable achievement for them. Their dedication and training truly paid off. The sense of pride they felt coming over that finish line and getting on the podium with their silver medals was amazing. We are so unbelievably proud of them.”
