Safety experts to examine blackspot

ROAD safety experts are to examine an accident blackspot junction in Kilmacrennan which has seen numerous near-fatalities, the latest of which emerged on social media.

Donegal Road Design Office is examining a junction in the middle of the village where the road intersects with the N56 just past St Columba’s Church before going in the direction of Milford.

A few weeks ago, a car coming from Trentagh Road went through the junction, colliding with a car travelling towards Letterkenny on the main road.

The issue was raised at the latest meeting of Letterkenny and Milford Municipal District when Councillor Michael McBride pleaded with the council to “get real” on the dangerous junction before a fatality occurs.

Cllr McBride said that he believed that at the very least, flashing stop signs must be installed at the Chapel Car Park in the village to warn motorists of the junction that is known as The Square.

He said: “Everyone will have seen footage on Facebook of the latest accident. I know personally this is the fourth time this has happened. It has been raised here time and time again. This area is not well enough marked. We need to put a stop flash sign up to raise awareness because it is only a matter of time before someone is killed.”

Councillor John O’Donnell agreed. He said road is a very busy thoroughfare and that he would like to see action as a matter of urgency

“It is a small village but it is the main link to west Donegal. We are fortunate that what happened wasn’t more serious, someone could have been fatefully hit.”
Responding, Council officials said the location has been referred to the Road Safety section in Roads Design.

“They will report back on the need and scope of a potential HD 17 Site then all options will be considered to deal with the specific Safety Issue identified.”
