THE need for further safety measures at Kilmacrennan national school was raised at Tuesday’s Letterkenny/Milford MD meeting by Cllrs John O’Donnell and Cllr Michael McBride.
The two separate motions were discussed together with Cllr McBride calling for flashing lights to be erected on the Trentagh side of Kilmacrennan National School to slow down the traffic at set down and pick up times in the interests of health and safety of the school children, their parents and staff.
Cllr O’Donnell called on the council to install speed ramps at the school.
He questioned why other counties could have speed ramps at schools and not here.
“Engineers did go out and installed yellow lines which created a bigger problem. It is now a straight run through. Contact the gardaí and get the traffic cones removed,” he said.
“When people saw the lines of cars they knew something was going on and slowed. With the cars gone, they are now going straight through. We need to create a set-down area. The long term solution is ramps.”
Cllr Liam Blaney said the situation met all of the criteria and suggested they try temporary plastic ramps which Cllr O’Donnell seconded.
The council executive written response stated: There are current school warning lights on both approaches to Kilmacrennan National School. A safety review was carried out at this school last month. Following the review road markings were installed to improve vision lines at the school crossing.”
Roads Engineer David McIlwaine said that part of the problem with having cars parked where the yellow line were now was that children were walking out from behind parked cars there.
