SAFETY assessments are to be carried out at two residential locations in Letterkenny following concerns about road safety.
Councillors Donal Kelly and Kevin Bradley brought separate motions to the latest meeting of Letterkenny and Milford Municipal District.
Councillor Kelly asked that Donegal Council put in place safety measures on the corner at the entrance to The Maples housing estate at Lismonaghan.
Councillor Bradley said speed ramps or traffic calming measures were urgently needed at Lower Ard O Donnell.
In respect of The Maples, Donal Kelly said he had received numerous calls from residents about cars cutting the corner on the way in to the estate.
“It’s a very sharp bend as you climb up the hill,” he said.
“What is actually happening is cars are cutting in on the corner and cars coming down can’t see them.
“Probably the best approach would be some kind of island in the middle to keep the traffic on its own side of the road.
“The day I was up a school bus came down Lismonaghan and he had to pull the bus directly across the road to stop the traffic, that is how dangerous it is. When you see that, it shouldn’t be happening.”
Engineer David McIlwaine vowed that the Council’s roads team would carry out a safety assessment to establish the issues and identify any possible solutions.
Kevin Bradley said that while a “fantastic” job had been done in creating a new traffic system close to St Eunan’s Cathedral, the nearby Lower Ard O’Donnell was in need of immediate attention.
“It is a built up area and you would have a lot of people walking there. I would like to see speed ramps or traffic calming introduced as a matter of urgency.”
David McIlwaine said that like The Maples, the roads section would arrange to carry out a safety assessment and consider if and what measures are required.
“This will include an assessment of the speeds at this location,” he added.
