Sadness in Fanad following death of much-loved John Carr

THERE is sadness in Fanad and beyond today with news of the death of one of the peninsula’s best known residents, John Carr.

John, from Glinsk, Fanad, died peacefully at his home on Wednesday, surrounded by his loving family.

A kind and caring neighbour and friend, John was very well known and worked for many years as a foreman with Donegal County Council.

He was also a very talented craftsman. He was famous for making beautiful horse drawn carts and his skills were often in big demand.

Our photo, taken by Brian McDaid,  shows John with his horse ‘Beauty’ in the background and one of the beautiful traps that he built and restored at his home in Fanad.  

John’s remains will repose at his late residence from 3pm today, Thursday.

A one way traffic system will be in operation during the day (entry at Leatbeg crossroad and exit at Ladden). From 4.30pm until 9.30pm minibus transport will then take over, pickup from the layby beside the Harry Blaney Bridge.

Removal from the family home on Saturday, December 23 arriving at St. Mary’s Church, Fanavolty for 11am Requiem Mass. Burial afterwards in the adjoining graveyard. Rosary both nights at 9pm.

Family time from 10pm to 11am and on the morning of the funeral. 

Family flowers only please, donations in lieu, if desired, to the Mevagh Fire Station c/o any family member.

The Funeral Mass will be streamed live on the McAteer Funeral Director Facebook page. 

John’s death is deeply regretted by his wife Bridget, daughters Mary McElwaine and her husband Patrick (Ballylar), Christine McElwaine and husband John (Ballylar), Anne McColgan and husband Owen (Muff), Fidelma Mc Daid and husband Gary (Glenswilly), Bridgeen Doherty and husband Paddy (Killyclug), Martina Harley and husband Gerard (RIP 2022) (Rathdonnell), sons Shaun and wife Susan (Aughnagaddy), Patrick and wife Mari (Glinsk), Paul and wife Siobhan (Grovehall, Ramelton) and Enda and wife Brighdín (Cashelshanaghan).

He will be sadly missed by sisters-in-law Anne Carr (Manchester) and May Carr (Buncrana), his 28 grandchildren, his six great-grandchildren, extended family, neighbours and his many many friends.
