Sadness at passing of Máire Rua Gallagher

THERE is much sadness in Donegal this morning at the passing of Máire Rua Gallagher.

One of Donegal’s most famous women, Máire Rua became a celebrity in her own right for her adoration of singer Daniel O’Donnell.

She spent many years as a bus conductress in Glasgow and was a life long supporter of Glasgow Celtic.

Over the years Máire Rua appeared on many television programmes as well as on Raidió na Gaeltachta and Highland Radio.

Paying tribute to Ms Gallagher following her death at the age of 91, singer and showbusiness personality Gary Gamble said, “She was full of life, craic, stories and loved all the Irish singers.

“She was a regular drop in to my radio show on Highland Radio and on Christmas Eve, me and Maire would always have the craic on air, she would have had at least six pages of requests every Christmas and written in green pen and she loved her green nail varnish.

“I’ll miss her letters written in green ink too with stories of her life on the buses in Glasgow, her journeys to venues to see other singers in Ireland and her praise for me and my career.”

Mr Gamble added, “God rest you Maíre Rúa, the lady with the heart of gold and a proud Donegal legend.”
