Runners to get into stride in memory of Jasmine

HUNDREDS of runners will put their best foot forward this Friday evening in memory of Killygordon murder victim Jasmine McMonagle.

Proceeds from the annual Mantis Cranes 5K Run and Walk will go towards Smile for Jasmine, a community organisation set up to support the young woman’s family but also to raise awareness of domestic violence. The group was established following the brutal murder of the young mother-of-two found stabbed to death at her home in Killygordon in January.

Helping organise the 5K Run and Walk is Niall Gallen.

“I didn’t know Jasmine personally but we thought it would be nice to do something to help keep her memory alive,” said Niall.

“We hold the 5K every year for a charity and this year we thought it would be good to keep it local. So I spoke to Jasmine’s family and they are overwhelmed by the fact that we want to remember her.”

The event, taking place on Friday June 14 at 7.30pm, is just one of a number being held in a community still coming to terms with the 28-year-old’s murder.

On Saturday June 15 the local Nomadic Dairies football team will face off in a charity match against a side from Aghyaran. Then on June 23 a group of local mothers will hold a coffee morning in Dromore National School.

Niall Gallen said, “It is all just an opportunity for people to remember Jasmine. The 5K route is designed to go through The Cross village and it will actually follow the route she would have walked when taking her children to school.

“By doing what we are doing, we are hoping to provide a platform where people can keep her memory alive but that will also support her family. We are coming into the summer holidays where parents will get to spend more time with their children. Sadly Jasmine won’t have that choice and we feel it is important that she is not forgotten.”

As well as the 5K Run and Walk, there is the option of a 1K Walk at the CAKE Centre in Killygordon. For more details on all the events being organised, check out the Smile for Jasmine Facebook page.
