RETAINED FIREFIGHTERS in Donegal are set to recommence their strike action tomorrow with stations set to close for 24 hours.
Retained firefighters will once again take to the picket line as a new industrial action rota for the fire stations in Donegal has been confirmed to members.
While these members are on strike, these stations will be closed and any emergency calls received will be handled by neighbouring stations.
Firefighters in Letterkenny will go on strike tomorrow, July 28 and on Monday, July 31.
Milford fire fighters will strike on Saturday July 29 and Tuesday, August 1, while Stranorlar firefighters will strike on Sunday, July 30 and Wednesday August 2.
Donegal Town will strike on Friday July 28 and Monday July 31 with Ballyshannon striking on Saturday July 29 and Tuesday August 1.
Bundoran will strike on Sunday July 30 and Wednesday August 2 while Killybegs will strike tomorrow Friday July 28 and August Monday July 31.
The industrial action has been escalated as retained firefighters who are members of trade union SIPTU voted to reject a Labour Court recommendation in their dispute saying the recommendations “did not go far enough.”
Retained firefighters from Donegal’s 15 fire stations are set to take to the picket line over a dispute around pay, conditions and a decent work/life balance.
Currently, retained firefighters are on call 24/7 for a minimum of 48 weeks a year and are required to live and work 2.5 kilometres from the station.
These requirements have led to problems with recruiting and retaining staff.
