THE once famous ‘Rose of the Finn’ is about to happen again.

A local committee has been established and the festival will again be run in Crossroads and Killygordon, like before, over the weekend of Friday August 1 to Sunday 3rd.

The first of the very successful weekends  commenced in 1981 taking in both villages and known locally as the ‘Gala Weekend.’

The festival will be based at the NewCamp/Curragh Athletic Sports Complex and will take in both villages of Crossroads and Killygordon.

Although there will be several events taking place over the weekend, one the main highlights, and one which is expected to draw huge crowds and publicity, will be the selection of the ‘Rose of the Finn’ which is planned for the Saturday evening.

Other events include a 5K run and walk, the parade, Irish Dancing, sports day including tug of war, a junior ‘Rose of the Finn’ and live music.

Although several meetings have taken place already, a weekly meeting will now take place every Tuesday  at 7.45 pm at the NewCamp Sports Complex and is open to anyone who wishes to attend.

The organising committee say they appreciate that most people are busy and may not wish to get involved in another organisation.

However, if anyone can help it will be much appreciated. Either way, the committee would like to hear your ideas, so as to help make the new festival a success.

Already some old photographs and a video of the past festivals have been located as have the minutes of the first ‘Gala’, where the first committee was elected at a meeting upstairs in the Lantern Inn.

That first committee that was elected on February 9, 1981 was as follows: Chairman, Maxi Mc Creary, Vice Chairman, Denis Roper, Secretary, Benny Browne, Assistant Secretary, Seamus McKelvey, Treasurers, Frank Kelly and Tommy Kelly.

Committee: Eithne Reid, Rose Reid (R.I.P), Liam Mc Colgan, Stanley Ewing, Michael Doherty, Teresa Costello, Mrs McCreary and Brian Doherty.

To make the festival successfu, the committee is asking for sponsorship and donations for a particular event or to provide manpower. Surplus proceeds will go towards underage soccer and pitch developments.
