Rory Kavanagh in action against Dublin’s Michael Darragh Macauley in the 2014 All-Ireland semi-final
RORY Kavanagh has confirmed his intention to retire from inter-county football.
The 32-year-old St Eunan’s man had been mulling over his future for some time, but his decision to retire ends a 14-year association with Donegal that spanned 132 games in the green and gold, 53 of them in the Championship.
Although converted into a midfielder in recent years, Kavanagh began as at half-forward.
Kavanagh first played for Donegal against Cork in the 2001 National League. His first taste of Championship action was as a sub against Down in 2002, but it wasn’t until 2006 that he started in the Championship, when he netted a goal in a 1-12 to 1-11 win over Down.
Kavanagh was county captain in 2009 and he won an All-Ireland in 2013, Ulster SFC titles in 2011, 2012 and 2014, while he was a member of the Division 1 League winning team in 2007 and also won a Division 2 medal in 2011. His last game for Donegal was the 2014 All-Ireland final defeat to Kerry.
He will continue to play for St Eunan’s, whom he led to Donegal SFC glory in 201
