A large black pig that was spotted running loose near busy roads in Donegal Town has been safely captured following a multi-agency rescue effort.
Donegal-based charity Animals In Need said the call out was one of their more unusual rescues.
The charity received a call from the gardaí who required their assistance in catching the pig.
Their volunteers used food to entice the animal away from the nearby busy main road to a safer area.
“We then set up a large, humane trap to try to catch him, but when we went back to check on it, he was standing outside it, having a good look.
“All we’d caught was a fed-up looking cat,” an Animals In Need volunteer explained.
Due to the proximity to traffic, it became a multi-agency job to catch the pig.
The Gardaí, the ISPCA, Bluestack Vets, Old Church Vets and Killian McLaughlin of Wild Ireland all joined in the endeavour.
After several failed attempts to secure the pig, Killian succeeded by using a dart gun to sedate him.
This was done under guidance from Nick, the vet from Old Church Vets, and Kevin McGinley, the Inspector from the ISPCA.
Animals In Need said, “Thankfully, the pig was none the worse for giving us all the run around.
“It was all down to collaboration, with rescue and professional organisations working together, which was great to be a part of.”
The pig was then transported safely into the care of the ISPCA team.
