MOTORISTS have been urged to be patient as roadworks at Newtowncunningham continue to cause lengthy delays and long tailbacks.
Roadworks are currently being carried out on the main Letterkenny to Derry road.
The works were centred around the Newtowncunningham area outside Kernans Diner and Filling Station, but contractors are now expected to move onto the Magherabeg area close to the school for the remainder of the week.
It is hoped that the works will be complete by today Friday.
However, the works have caused major delays due to a lane closure.
Some motorists reported waiting up to 45 minutes in the queue in the morning while others, travelling on the road in the afternoon, said they waited 20 minutes to get through the lights.
Tailbacks were reported back as far as Manorcunningham and Burt.
The road is particularly busy this week due to the Foyle Cup being held in Derry with a number of teams from Donegal taking part in the competition.
Local Cllr Paul Canning said the works in the Newtowncunningham area should be finished by today (Thursday) but the work will then be carried out at Magherabeg School.
He said the contractors are aware of the traffic problems and are working to keep delays to a minimum.
“The contractors will complete their works in the Magherabeg area and be finished by Friday evening.
“That’s the plan.
“The contractors are aware of the peak time traffic pressure and will try to work accordingly, but they also want to be in and out as soon as possible.
“They are monitoring the delays and are trying to keep them below 20 minutes maximum.
“Thank you all for your patience and apologise for any inconvenience caused,” said Cllr Canning.
Donegal County Council has been contacted but failed to respond at the time of going to print.
