A DEDICATED policing plan will be rolled out across the county this Easter Bank Holiday weekend.
Gardaí are appealing to all road users to exercise caution, particularly over the long weekend when road traffic increases.
Drivers are being reminded to slow down, watch out for vulnerable road users such as pedestrians and cyclists and to take regular breaks on long journeys to avoid driver fatigue.
Motorists are urged not to drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs, to always wear a seatbelt and to avoid using or holding mobile phones while driving.
Pedestrians are also advised to ensure they are clearly visible to traffic, especially during darker hours, by wearing reflective clothing or carrying a torch.
This weekend, Garda operations will focus on the detection of ‘lifesaver offences’ including speeding, drink and drug driving, mobile phone use while driving and the non-wearing of seat belts.
“Many families will be out on the roads enjoying their Easter break this weekend and so we urge all drivers to be mindful of their own safety and the safety of others.
“We can all play a part in preventing tragedies on our roads and we urge all road users to do their bit by making responsible decisions,” a Garda spokesperson said.
In addition, those heading out socialising are advised to plan ahead, travel in groups and avoid walking alone at night. Keep valuables secure in public places and park vehicles in well-lit areas, ensuring no valuables are left inside.
Additional patrols will be active throughout Donegal over the weekend, with Gardaí on the beat and conducting roadside checks.
