Road safety plans at Magherabeg National School

A SCHOOL road once dubbed the “most dangerous in Ireland” because of its notoriously treacherous stretch, is set to benefit from a new design concept to improve safety.

The ‘Front of School’ treatment is part of the Safe Routes to School (SRTS) Programme, Transport Infrastructure Ireland (TII) in partnership with the National Transport Authority (NTA) and Green-Schools. It is being trailled along the N13, where Magherabeg National School is located, as well as a number of other national routes.

A Donegal County Council spokesperson told the Donegal News: “NTA and TII identified three locations for SRTS pilot and trial schemes for schools on National routes.

“One of the schools identified is Magherabeg National School (Scoil Phroinnseas Naofa) located along the Letterkenny to Bridge End Road (N13) in the townland of Magherabeg at Manorcunningham, Letterkenny, Co Donegal.

“The N13 is a high speed national route with a high Annual Average Daily Traffic (AADT).

“The pilot scheme aims to minimise the current risks to vulnerable road users at the school during drop-off and pick-up times (term time only) and create school zones which will provide a more managed and consistent approach to the reduction of speeds during the school drop off and pick uptimes.”

All works are scheduled to be completed before the schools return in September.
