Road safety message not “hitting home”, say gardaí

by Louise Doyle

GARDAÍ have said the message of road safety is failing to “hit home” following eight arrests over the Bank Holiday weekend.

The motorists were arrested in Donegal Division for drink and drug driving offences.

There were four drink-driving related arrests, while four drivers were arrested for drug related offences across the Division.

The arrests occurred between Friday morning and Tuesday morning.

Gardaí conducted checkpoints, patrols and speed checks over the weekend.

Fixed Charge penalty Notices have been issued for various offences and a number of vehicles were seized.

A garda spokesperson said the message of road safety is not “hitting home”.

“Thankfully we did not have any fatal road traffic collisions in the Donegal Division over the course of the May Bank Holiday Weekend but it is obvious that the road safety message is unfortunately not hitting home with some people.

“We continue to appeal to all drivers to slow down, to drive with care and never to drive while under the influence of alcohol and/or drugs.”
