Rising rat and mouse activity reported in north west

RENTOKIL has reported a 12 per cent rise in rat activity and a 43 per cent rise in mouse activity in the north west region during the first three months of this year compared with the same period in 2024.

As well as the north west, which includes Donegal, the border, midlands and west regions, which includes the counties of Cavan, Leitrim, Monaghan, Mayo, Roscommon, and Sligo are also affected by rising infestations.

Nationally, Rentokil has reported a 45 per cent increase in rat activity and a 39 per cent rise in mouse activity for the same period, highlighting a widespread issue across Ireland and the need for increased pest vigilance.

Rentokil recently launched RADAR X, a new solution for mouse control. It features dual chambers for continued trapping capability, a CO₂ dispatch system for humane elimination, and a robust, water-resistant design. This bait-free unit is especially suitable for food-sensitive and commercial environments due to its HACCP-approved construction.

Colm Moore, Regional Technical Manager at Rentokil, said: “Mouse activity in this region has increased significantly, and the trend is likely to continue. Our RADAR X system gives customers a reliable, discreet option for tackling mice indoors, along with tried and tested solutions like Flexi Armour. For information on RADAR X, Flexi Armour, or other pest prevention options, visit the Rentokil website.”

Rats remain the most common pest issue affecting Irish properties. They can cause serious structural damage by chewing through utility lines, electrical wiring, and insulation. Mice, while smaller, pose similar risks and can often go unnoticed until infestations are well-established.

Common signs of rat or mouse activity include droppings, scratching noises in walls or ceilings, footprints, and gnaw marks. Businesses, in particular, should be alert to the reputational damage and health risks associated with infestations, including the spread of disease through contact with rodent droppings or urine.
