Rise in theft of Japanese cars in Letterkenny

A WARNING over the lack of security measures in imported vehicles has been made following a rise in the theft of Japanese cars in Letterkenny.

Gardaí are advising owners of imported vehicles, particularly Japanese imports, to check out the security features and make decisions relating to augmenting security.

A garda spokesperson said: “Many second-hand car imports do not have a fully fitted car alarm system or are without a fitted immobiliser.

This makes them vulnerable to hot-wiring. For cars without an immobiliser, an additional steering wheel lock or chain should be considered.

“If the model has a keyless ignition it has been proven possible to pick up a signal from the key fob from within the house where it is parked.

“We have certainly noticed a rise in the theft of Japanese imported vehicles in particular within the Letterkenny District in recent times and so we urge owners of these types of vehicles to take the necessary steps to ensure that their vehicle is secure.”
