RESIDENTS of east Donegal have told how they are living in fear and are afraid to walk the streets amid ‘rising crime’ in the area and a lack of gardaí.

A public crime prevention meeting took place in Lifford on Tuesday night, just yards from where two men were viciously attacked at a house on Monday.

One man, aged in his 20s, named locally as Charles Dooher, was airlifted to the Royal Victoria Hospital in Belfast for treatment of serious injuries.

A second man, in his 60s, was brought by ambulance to Letterkenny University Hospital for treatment of less serious injuries.

Detectives from the Police Service of Northern Ireland’s Serious Crime Branch, who are assisting An Garda Síochána with the investigation into the serious assault, arrested two men in Derry.

The community engagement and crime prevention meeting was one of a number to take place across the district. It had been scheduled to take place prior to the horrific assault on Monday, which has left a community reeling.
