Two houses were revamped into apartments and had been occupied for some time in Fairgreen Park. However, more recently the properties have become vacant and a magnet for anti social behaviour. Donegal Fire Service have been called to the area numerous times after the apartments were set alight.
Councillor Gerry McMonagle said the issue must be resolved once and for all. He has called on Donegal County Council to buy the vacant houses.
Speaking at the latest Letterkenny-Milford Municipal District meeting, Cllr McMonagle said the situation is deplorable for residents.
“People in Fairgreen are living in fear,” he said.
‘Revamped’
“Two houses there were revamped into apartments. They were lived in for a time but have been vacant for quite some time with the downturn and the owner is not in a position to look after the properties. They have been vandalised on numerous occasions and the fire brigade have been called. It’s a very dangerous situation.
“Young people need not to have any places where they can congregate. We can’t stand idly by and let this situation continue. Someone will get injured or worse.”
Cllr McMonagle said he wants Donegal County Council to move “as a matter of urgency” to investigate the possibility of buying the houses with a view to returning them to provide social housing in the area.
“If there is no money under the Housing Scheme, I would strongly argue we do it under the Vacant Housing Sites.”
His calls were backed by Councillor Jimmy Kavanagh.
Council officials said there is a difficulty in identifying ownership of the properties.
“It is a live issue,” said a spokesperson.
“Donegal County Council will inspect the properties and consider if they meet the Department’s criteria for acquisition of properties for Social Housing as set out in the Housing Circular 20/2021.
