A NEW report from Talamh Beo has detailed a series of measures that will help Ireland reduce methane emissions from agriculture while transferring control of the country’s food system from the agribusiness sector to farmers, food producers, and consumers.
The grassroots sustainable farming organisation launched its Methane Matters Position Paper at Buswells Hotel on Molesworth Street in Dublin on Wednesday, November 19.
Deputy Pat the Cope Gallagher was in attendance.
The Position Paper was developed as part of Talamh Beo’s role in the Methane Matters Coalition, a consortium of 17 European NGOs working across energy, agriculture, and waste sectors to secure significant reductions in methane emissions by 2030.
Talamh Beo engaged 12 farmers across nine counties in Ireland to map their perspectives on environmental policy and governance challenges facing the farming industry.
From this process, the organisation identified solutions for methane mitigation based on sustainable farming practices, as well as other measures designed to boost revenue, reduce costs, and educate communities on the benefits of agroecology.
