THE remnants of Hurricane Ernesto are set to hit Donegal tonight.
Hurricane Ernesto is forecasted to track eastwards and combine with low pressure over Iceland today, passing between Ireland and Iceland tonight.
As this low pressure system tracks past the north-west, it will bring a spell of rather windy and wet weather across the country.
Fresh to strong, gusty southerly winds will develop in Donegal with the strongest winds expected in coastal areas.
The low pressure system will coincide with very high spring tides tonight and Thursday.
The combination of these very high tides with strong winds will result in high waves and forecasted surge may lead to coastal flooding and wave overtopping.
Rain will also move eastwards across the country and that will turn heavy at times, especially over high ground.
By tomorrow morning, Thursday, it will turn drier and winds will moderate but there is potential for another spell of wet and windy weather on Thursday night.
