Relay for Life organisers appeal for teams ahead of May event

By Paddy Walsh

With just under four months to go to the staging of this year’s Donegal Relay for Life, an urgent appeal has gone out for the registration of teams who form a key role in the fund-raising event.

“Basically without the teams we don’t have a Relay,” the organising committee’s new chairperson Seamus Devine insists.
“And from here on we’re open for registration and hope to get as many teams as possible to come on board.”

Donegal Relay for Life has been instrumental in raising both funding – well over €1.7 million since its initiation here in 2012 – and awareness.

The 24 hour event – scheduled for May 25 and 26 – runs under three themes, Celebrate, Remember and Fight Back. Relay celebrates the survivors, remembers those who didn’t make it, and endeavours to fight back against the tide of cancer through education and awareness.

“We invite families, friends and work colleagues to help make up the teams that are so vital for the success of Relay,” says Seamus, who describes himself as the younger version of his predecessor, Robert O’Connor!
“There may be a couple of alterations to the event including bringing the starting time on the Saturday back an hour to 4pm and correspondingly the closing time on Sunday.
“But generally Donegal Relay for Life will run as it has done since its inception and help contribute to cancer research and other vital aspects of patient caring.

“We need those teams, however,” says the chairperson. “Last year we had around thirty and we’re aiming for even more this time out. And like every year there’s always a fantastic atmosphere at the ATU complex, formerly the LYIT.
“Together we can all make a difference,” adds Seamus.
