Relay for Life hailed a huge success

THE Chairman of Relay for Life Donegal has said €92,000 has so far been raised after the weekend’s hugely successful fundraising event.

An emotional Robert O’Connor was speaking to the Donegal News moments after he received a number of presentations on stage to mark the end of an era for him as chairperson of Relay for Life Donegal after 11 years at the helm.

Poignantly, his daughter, who lives in Singapore, made the surprise journey home to join in with the celebrations.

“I have just literally come off the stage where a number of presentations were made to myself as retiring chairperson of Relay for Life, including my own daughter who lives in Singapore who came home on Friday night to surprise me, and leaves again on Monday. I was not expecting it at all.

“I am feeling very emotional. I feel all sorts of emotions. I can’t describe it at this stage. I was presented with a couple of presentations and I really wasn’t expecting it. It was a very well kept secret involving my family, friends and all at Relay for Life Donegal.”

Mr O’Connor said he was “blown away” by the monies raised over the weekend event.

“So far we have €92,000 raised but not all monies are in yet. I am totally blown away by the amount, it is colossal. Relay for Life has been going since 2012 and I have been chairperson since then,” said Mr O’Connor.
