Naomh Conaill manager Martin Regan knows what it takes to go on a good run through the Ulster Senior Club Championship.

The Glenties side are back on the provincial trail this Sunday for the first time in five years, when they face Tyrone champions Trillick.

Regan was starring in midfield when Naomh Conaill reached the Ulster Club final in 2010. His past experiences tell him that you need a lot of breaks to make good progress through the competition.

“You can build a lot of momentum through the Ulster Championship, but you need things to go your way,” said Regan

“You need to stay injury-free. In ‘10, we didn’t have anyone injured or suspended and we named the same starting team for the three games we played.

“Against Coalisland that year, we were a point down with five or six minutes left, when we got a dubious enough free to level things up, and we didn’t look back after that.

“Things need to go your way, because it’s fine margins. If you look at the Donegal Championship, we didn’t have any injuries, except for Brendy (McDyer), who was back for the final.

“Against Termon, after they got a goal, we went down the field and got a point.

“In the final against St Eunan’s, they might have got an equaliser if Leo didn’t win that last kick-out. It’s small things and you have to be in the right place at the right time.”
