Redmond Herrity’s stunning sculpture for Moya

By Kate Heaney

LETTERKENNY based sculptor Redmond Herrity was so delighted to see his friend Moya Brennan being awarded the Donegal Person of the Year accolade that he asked the association members if he could create the actual award for her.

The beautifully sculpted fabric draped harp in Italian marble is Redmond’s own tribute to the Clannad singer whom he has known for many years.

Speaking to the Donegal News this week Redmond said he really wanted to make this special sculpture for Moya.

The Donegal Person of the Year award – “It was an honour to create it for Moya” – Redmond Herrity.

“I have made awards for The Donegal Person of the Year over the past twelve years. When I saw Moya was the winner I put a proposal to the association members telling them I would put my heart and soul into this for Moya, regardless of budget, as she has always been very supportive of my work.

“The committee said they would like a harp but I thought she probably has harps coming out her ears so I created it draped in fabric sculpted from marble, which adds a bit of mystery to it. It took around four weeks to create. It is the finishing with fine sanding which gives it its transparency. It is made from a single block of marble,” Redmond said.

He added that after the official presentation by the committee, he was allowed to present the sculpture to Moya and have his photograph taken doing so.

“It was an honour to create it for her,” Redmond said.
