Red Hugh’s place of birth and death twinned

THE Red Hugh O’Donnell – Fighting Prince of Donegal group this week warmly welcomed the twinning of Lifford/ Stranorlar MD with Simancas in Spain.

The twinning was passed by a full Plenary meeting of Donegal County Council on Monday in Lifford.

Mr Eddie Crawford is one of the organisers behind the campaign to twin the place of birth of Red Hugh O’Donnell (Mongalvin Castle in 1572) and the place of his death, Simancas Castle in Spain in 1602.

Speaking after the council’s approva, Mr Crawford said this was the final stage of the Irish part in twinning Lifford and Simancas.

“Another milestone in the promotion of our local born Chieftain and National Hero, Red Hugh O’Donnell.

“Both councils will now liaise with each other in the form of working committee’s to see it through.

“Ó’Donnell Abu,” he added.
