DONEGAL has moved to the top of the Covid-19 charts.
It follows confirmation that the HPSC has been notified of 75 confirmed cases of Covid-19 in Donegal today – the largest number ever recorded in a single day.
It moves Donegal 14-day incidence rate per 100,000 population over the 300 mark (300.3) almost 100 over the national average which stands at 202.1
There has been a marked increase in the number of patients being treated for Covid-19 at Letterkenny University Hospital over the past seven days.
Front line staff were caring for nineteen patients with confirmed Covid-19, as well as nine suspected cases on Wednesday night. There was just one vacant beds in the hospital’s intensive care unit (ICU), where one critically ill patient is being treated for the coronavirus illness.
It follows confirmation that patients are currently experiencing long waiting times to be admitted from the Emergency Department to an acute bed in the hospital.
Management said the hospital has also seen an increase in the numbers of patients presenting with Covid-19 symptoms recently and an increase in isolation requirements to prevent the spread of infection. Meanwhile, Dr. Tony Holohan, Chief Medical Officer, Department of Health, said; “A second surge is taking place across Europe. Ireland and Finland are the only European countries in the EU where reductions in 14 – day incidence have been observed. All other countries are increasing.
“Level 5 efforts over the last two weeks have succeeded in further reducing community transmission and disease incidence in Ireland, however, now is not the time to be complacent. We must keep driving down this disease- we must keep going.
