Reconvened Council meeting to be held today

THE reconvened Council meeting is set to be held today at 2pm in the Aura Leisure Centre, Letterkenny.
Last Monday, Donegal County Council’s monthly meeting was once again adjourned amid a Garda investigation following
a number of incidents at the Aura Leisure Centre. The meeting was adjourned until today Wednesday, April 6 at 2pm.
Gardai were called to the scene following allegations of threats being made against a number of councillors.
The meeting was initially adjourned for an hour as party whips held a meeting privately to decide how to proceed.
However, after an hour Cathaoirleach, Cllr Jack Murray said he had been told by staff and councillors that they did not feel safe and said he had no other option but to once again adjourn
the meeting.
Over the last eight months the Council has struggled to get through its weighty agendas due to a series of adjournments following heated rows breaking out which involved Cllr Frank McBrearty.
It came to a head when the local authority, secured a High Court order, last month restraining the Raphoe independent, from attending any of its, meetings.
Monday’s meeting was the, first plenary meeting Cllr McBrearty, attended since his suspension.,
Cllr McBrearty maintains that his suspension was baseless due to counter-allegations he has made against Donegal County Council.
Last week he told this newspaper: “In due course, I will prove that my suspension was invalid due to a conflict of interest because I have accused them of corruption.”
The Donegal News contacted the Garda Press Office in relation to last Monday’s meeting and they provided the following statement.

“On the morning of Monday, 28th March, 2022, Gardaí were called to the scene of a premises in Letterkenny, County Donegal, following reports of an alleged disturbance. No arrests have been made. Investigations are ongoing.”

The press office also noted that the alleged disturbance was verbal in nature.
