'Rebirth of Supporters Clubs a must'

 BY CHRIS MCNULTY

FINN Harps Treasurer Denise O’Neill says that the rebirth of Finn Harps Supporters Clubs around Donegal can help give the club an inlet into the different areas of the county.

In the early noughties when Harps teetered on the brink several supporters clubs sprang up to join existing ones. At their zenith, Harps had supporters clubs in Ballybofey/Stranorlar, Letterkenny, Raphoe, Castlefin, St Johnston, Inishowen, South Donegal and Dublin.

Some time later, a club was active in Donegal Town while another in Strabane proved successful for a time. And all through the last decade or so, the colourful FBTN (From Behind The Nets) Supporters Club has been a consistent backer of events.

But as the support for Harps has waned due to the club’s slide, the supporters club movement has died off too – something the treasurer wants to change.

“I would love to see the re emergence of supporters clubs throughout the county,” says Ms O’Neill, who was a member of the Ballybofey and Stranorlar SC in its heyday.

“It has been a hobby horse of mine for a while. I think it would give ownership again to the supporters on a county wide level and their input would be invaluable.

“We want to be representative of our supporters, in so far as possible. We need to communicate with them and make them feel that they have a voice.”
