DONEGAL County Council has been asked to tackle the old dump at Raphoe once and for all after it was claimed that there are “rats bigger than cats” at the site.
Cllr Frank McBrearty said fly-tipping remained a problem at the old dump which has become overgrown with trees.
“I want to see the dump taken away. It’s no longer in existence as a dump,” said Cllr McBrearty.
“There is still people fly-tipping in the area and you can see it when the hedges are being cut back.”
He said when the hedges are cut back you can see chip bags, bottles and rubbish lying on the road.
“It is a complete eye sore in that part of Raphoe. The rats are bigger than cats. Big bales of hay are being stored on top of the old dump.
“It is a breeding ground for vermin. I wouldn’t like to pick something up with my hand in that area.”
Cllr McBrearty said a review of the dump was needed as well as funding to deal with the issue. He said signage was erected which has acted as a good deterrent for dumping but that something needs to be done in the long term as it is one of the busiest roads in the constituency.
Council official, Mr Paul Gallagher, from the Environment Section said there may be funding available and that they will look into it. In the meantime he said the litter team are happy to engage with Cllr McBrearty and assess and clean up the area.
