Rathmullan singer-songwriter Carol Wilson is treading new waters as she releases her first song in Irish, first dance track, first collaborative release and first on-site video release in one.
Grá, released today, is about a journey from darkness into light.
“It’s about someone who is in the darkest of dark places, questioning everything about life, and being in complete despair – but slowly, over time things change, answers come and they go from despair to happiness again, this time with a deeper and better understanding of life,” said Carol.
To date, Carol has released seven singles, an album (Trouble Me 2021), an EP (Live at The Balor, 2023) and is currently working on her second album ‘Magnolia’.
She recently placed third overall in Music Capital’s International Singer-Songwriter Competition and is co-founder, co-host and performer at the regular music nights ‘Frida Fridays’ at ‘An Stad’ restaurant, Rathmullan.
Speaking about why she is venturing into collaborating the Irish language with her music, Carol said she has always had a “deep love” for the language.
“I’m from the Gaeltacht and have always had a deep love for the Irish language, so I’m excited to finally be releasing a song in our native tongue”, says Carol.
“I’ve worked with Tommy Conway many times before at his recording studio, and knew instinctively that he would understand what I was reaching for. It was an exciting collaboration and I was delighted with the end result.”
The song’s release is accompanied by a music video shot in the historic Battery site in Rathmullan with videographer, Jeffin Varghese.
“Although it was freezing, shooting in just a dress on a cold December day, overall we’d loads of fun making the video, getting creative and coming up with ideas as we went along. It’s a stunning old building, steeped in character and history, so along with the cold, it was the perfect setting and atmosphere for the dramatic feeling of ‘Grá’.”
Grá is out today, and Carol will celebrate its release with a live performance at the Imbolc Frida Fridays on Friday, February 2 and at An Stad, Rathmullan and Mini-Mouthpiece’s all woman show at The Cottage Bar Letterkenny on Wednesday, February 7.
