Raphoe to feel the strong arm of the law

Garda Sergeant Jim Collins with his European Championship powerlifting medal. Sergeant Collins is behind a farmer-style strongman competition and fun day taking place in Raphoe tomorrow (Saturday) from 9.30am to 5.30pm.

AN iron pumping Garda officer is hoping to ‘lift’ a few euros for charity in Raphoe.

Sergeant Jim Collins, a world and European championship powerlifter, is the co-organiser of a farmer-style strongman competition and fun day taking place tomorrow (Saturday).

All money raised will go towards helping two little local ladies who are struggling with health issues.

Set to benefit from the family fun day are Kelsey Barnett and Mikaela Breen.

Kelsey, who is five years old and from Raphoe, is bravely battling neuroblastoma while Convoy’s Mikaela (7) has spina bifida.

The strongman competition will take place over nine events throughout the day with categories for both men and women.

There will also be a vintage tractor and car display as well as a fun fair, trade stands and more.

All events are free but Sergeant Collins said donation buckets will be doing the rounds on the day.

“We are aiming for something a little bit different in aid of two very good causes.

“We have deliberately designed the strongman event for all-comers, regardless of size or weight. There will be categories for both men and women too.

“Really it is a fun day for all the family with amusements, vintage cars and tractors and stalls.

“Everything is free but we will be asking for donations for both charities.”
