Raphoe man charged with Seamus Doherty murder

SAMUEL James Clarke appeared in Buncrana District Court this morning in connection with the murder of Seamus Doherty. Mr Clarke (52) of Magherane, Raphoe, who was arrested last night in Raphoe, was led into Buncrana court at 10.30am this morning. Handcuffed, he was wearing a black coat and dark trousers and was flanked by four Gardai. Detective Inspector Pat O’Donnell read out the charge and said that Mr Clarke was arrested at 8.55pm last night and conveyed to Letterkenny Garda Station where he was charged at 9.44pm. When he was charged and cautioned his only comment was “no comment”. His solicitor Donough Cleary made an application for legal aid which was granted. His said that his client was a small farmer. Inspector David Murphy made an application that Mr Clarke be remanded in custody to appear at Harristown Court tomorrow. Mr Doherty (67), from Churchill was found dead on June 17, 2012. Gardai and emergency services had been called to a house at Drumacnoo near the village of Churchill at 1.50am on the morning of June 17, 2012, where the body of Mr Doherty was discovered. He was pronounced dead at the scene and removed to Letterkenny Hospital. Following a post-mortem examination carried out by the State Pathologist Professor, Marie Cassidy on June 19, the it was established that Mr Doherty had died in suspicious circumstances.
