RAPHOE ABC’s Dennis Lafferty bids for national glory this weekend when the Ballindrait man lines up in the Irish Colleges final at the National Stadium on Saturday.
The livewire Lafferty is in the 60kgs final and takes on Stephen Benson from IT Tralee.
Lafferty is in fine form, with three wins this season already, including an impressive defeat of Ronan McGrinder (Lisnafin), the hottest property in Tyrone boxing, at a recent show in St Patrick’s Hall, Strabane.
Five boxers entered his division, including Dungloe southpaw Darren McCole, who represented DIT, but lost out to Benson.
Lafferty was set to glove off in a semi-final on Saturday, but his opponent pulled out of the contest.
Now, the North-West Regional College student is set to go through the ropes for the final this Saturday.
Gerard Callaghan (St Bridget’s and Letterkenny IT) was beaten in his middleweight semi by Noel Murphy (Cork IT), while there are three champions by virtue of walkover wins for Donegal boxers: Illies Golden Gloves pair Daryl Moran and John Cassidy, as well as the Twin Towns man Danny Tourish.
