The tragic death of the Monaghan GAA U20 captain Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh in a car crash at the weekend is being mourned in the Ranafast area. The young man died just hours after playing in the Ulster Championship semi-final against Donegal.
Brendan Óg, 19, is a son of Brendan and Esther Ó Dufaigh who have a holiday home on the Annagry to Crolly road near Ranafast. He has two sisters Claire and Áine. The family is well known in the west Donegal area and Brendan senior has been associated with Coláiste Bhríde in Ranafast for many years.
Brendan Óg was pronounced dead at the scene following a two car collision at Tullybuck, Clontibret, County Monaghan around 11.30pm on Friday night. Earlier in the day he helped his Monaghan U20s team defeat Donegal at Brewster Park in Enniskillen.
Brendan’s funeral mass will take place on Wednesday in St. Macartan’s Cathedral, Monaghan at 11am followed by burial in St. Joseph’s Old Cemetery, Latlurcan.
He will repose at his home from Monday evening at 6pm until the cortege will leave his home at 10.15am on Wednesday morning. Due to government guidelines, the wake and funeral will be private to family and friends.
Described as a very talented GAA footballer, Brendan Óg turned down a request earlier this year to join the Monaghan senior team as he felt he was still too young.
In a post on their Facebook page, the board of Áislann Rann na Feirste expressed sympathy to the family.
“In ainneoin an lae bhreá te samhraidh, tá scamall dubh dorcha ar an bhaile seo inniu as siocair an drochscéala a tháinig chugainn ar maidin. Is trom ár gcroíthe agus muid ag guí agus ag smaointiú ar Chlann Uí Dhufaigh; Brendan, Esther agus na girseachaí, Claire agus Áine. Go raibh leabaí ag Brendan Óg i measc na naomh,” they said.
Monaghan Harps GAA Club has postponed all activities until further notice.
“Our club is devastated at the news of the untimely death of our senior player and county U-20 captain Brendan Óg Ó Dufaigh. Our thoughts are with his family and friends at this very sad time. All club activity has been postponed until further notice,” they said in a Facebook post.
