OPINIONS were divided at the weekend when illustrations of the Ramelton Flood Relief Scheme were presented to the public.

Some locals feel the proposed changes will take away from the town’s historic feel, while others have welcomed the plans.

The purpose of the scheme is to alleviate the risk of flooding to the community of Ramelton through delivering a scheme that is technically, socially, environmentally and economically acceptable.

The Ramelton Flood Relief Scheme is being carried out in coordination with other projects such as the Ramelton Re-imagined Project, the Ramelton Sewerage Scheme, Ramelton Tidy Towns and the Historic Towns Initiative.

Ramelton Re-imagined is a restorative and transformational town centre regeneration project being led by Donegal County Council.

Comprising of multiple public realm interventions, the regeneration project will transform the public spaces within the historic town core, consequently enhancing the physical, environmental, social and economic capacity of the town.

In illustrations uploaded to the Ramelton Tidy Town’s Facebook page this week, locals got a glimpse of what the Shore Road and the Quay in Ramelton may look like after work has been carried out.

Tying in with the Ramelton Flood Relief Scheme, some of the illustrations include proposed flood defence walls.

With the illustrations portraying a futuristic look for the town, many locals are demanding the heritage town to be kept as it is now.

“Keep it as it is, a heritage town that we all love,” one local said.

“Ramelton is beautiful and unique as it is now,” another said.

Ramelton is one of five designated heritage towns in Donegal.

With a rich and cultural heritage lending the town a distinctive visage, the new plans have been described as leaving the town “sterile” and “bereft of atmosphere”.

However, others seemed to love the idea of a “modern” Ramelton with one saying it was great to see “fresh thinking”.
