OBJECTORS to the Ramelton Georgian Society’s plans to build in the grounds of the House on the Brae in the town were thwarted last week when An Bord Pleanála upheld the planning permission granted by Donegal County Council.
They believe their only option now is the legal route.
While the objections were not against development of the grounds, the three local objectors believed the design was not in keeping with the protected structure and the historic nature of the Bridge Street site.
The new building is intended to provide an exhibition space and multi-purpose room.
Speaking to the Donegal News yesterday local resident Cassandra Helm, one of the objectors, said their only option now was a legal challenge.
“The permission granted to the ‘Ramelton Georgian Society’ (unregistered) to build a modern, new construction on the site of the House on the Brae on the Shore Road is in blatant violation of zoning requirements and of protections for historic sites in the area of which the House on the Brae is one.
“We have objected twice and it looks as though our only course of action now is a legal one,” Ms Helm said.
She added: “What is incredibly frustrating is that local owners have been denied planning for minor improvements to their properties which in no way detract from the authenticity of the sites themselves.
“We do not object to change of use. Our objection is entirely to do with the design itself,” she concluded.
