Rachael Darragh’s Olympic dreams end in group stage

Rachael Darragh’s Olympics debut has come to an end this afternoon as she was defeated in her second and final group game in the Badminton Women’s Singles.

A huge task came in the second game as she faced former Olympic Gold medallist Carolina Marin from Spain.

And it was the Spaniard who took the victory in straight sets, winning 21-5, 21-5.

The Raphoe Badminton Club member was defeated yesterday in her opening Group L game to Jenjira Stadelmann of Switzerland.

Darragh stormed to the lead with a 21-13 win in the first set but her opponent grew into the game in the second set.

The Raphoe native had a match point at 22-21 but Stadelmann took the second set 24-22 and powered on to win the final set by 21-15.

Just 26 years old, Darragh has plenty ahead of her and will hope to make the 2028 Olympics in Los Angeles.
