Quigley in Minsk with Irish boxers

FINN VALLEY boxer Jason Quigley arrived in Minsk, Belarus, on Tuesday with the Irish Elite squad ahead of the opening bell for the 2013 European Men’s Championships.

The Middleweight is part of a ten-strong Irish team who left their training camp in Kiev, Ukraine en route to Minsk for the 40th European Men’s Championships which begin tomorrow, Saturday.

Winner of European gold at Youth and U23 level, this is Jason’s first time competing in the European Men’s Championships where he will be paired against many of the finest exponents of the sport in the world.

Irish U18 squad

It’s been a good week for the Finn Valley club as Jason’s young colleague Austeja Auciute and Maeve McCarron (Carrigart ABC) have been named on the Irish U18 squad who will travel to Hungary at the end of June to take part in the European Championships.

Austeja, who won her seven Irish title earlier this month, is a student at St Columba’s College, Stranorlar. She will be competing at 66kg while Maeve will box at 91kg+ – Super-heavyweight.

Meanwhile, Peter O’Donnell (Raphoe ABC) was elected as President of the Donegal Boxing Board at their AGM which took place in Letterkenny on Tuesday night.

O’Donnell, who previously served as President between 1996 and 2000, takes over from Dominic McCafferty (Convoy ABC) who held the post for the past two years.

The officers elected were: Peter O’Donnell, President, Vice Jack Green, secretary James McCarron, treasurer Fergal McLaughlin, assistant treasurer Jim McCole, registrar Johnny McDaid, PRO Peter O’Donnell and County Coaches John Elliot, Letterkenny, Dominic McCafferty, Convoy and Paddy Doherty, St John Bosco.
